The physical boardgame needs the tokens on the starting cards to keep track of who's who on the scoring track, and who the first player is. The BGA implementation doesn't have a scoring track, and the first player is tracked in the sidebar.
Would suggest just removing the unnecessary tokens, but if it's important to respect the aesthetic, they could at least have tooltips to say what they are. Every game I've played of Codex Naturalis so far has included a "wait, what's that token?" question from an opponent playing for the first time. -
