I had two converters - one that was 1 red to 2 red, one that was a red to any colour. I wanted to build first a 5 yellow, and had one red in my pool. I first tried to use the converter to change the 1 to 2, then convert one of the two produced to yellow. The game had automatically selected the other 4 energy I already had in the correct colour, and after using the converters, it said "Build (5/5 yellow)" and the button was blue, indicating I could successfully build.
