BROT42The game experience of VektoRace is strongly related to its physical aspects, thus, to adapt the game to the digital world of BoardGameArena, some modifications were made in order to make the game experience more fluid and enjoyable. BROT42Normally, the game would be played on any flat surface, and the track would be defined by the curve markers placed freely by the players on the playing surface at the start of the game. BROT42For simplicity, this implementation doesn't allow custom made tracks and instead uses the default map "Indianottolis" in its four variants, which is commonly used for demonstrations and tournaments at games fairs.4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
BROT42For this tutorial, the 4th track layout was chosen, which is shaped like a triangle. Take some time now to scroll and zoom the map and get comfortable with its controls.5archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000

BROT42Another modification to the original rules is the presence of map boundaries, which are highlighted with the red dashed lines. These limits define the area of the track outside of which any position is considered not valid. The same goes for positions outside the game map image.7archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000

BROT42Normally this area would be touching the pit lane line visible on the pit wall game component, but due to the layouts of this particular map, it has been moved a little bit backwards to avoid giving too much of an advantage to the pole player on the first curve.11archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000

BROT42After selecting your initial position you have to choose the starting amount of both Tire and Nitro Tokens for this race, which are 8 total. These tokens let you perform special maneuvers like braking, turning your car in extreme ways, boost your movement, surpass your opponent with a slingshot pass and more!1archiveCommentElementPointerTargetInner626a94296afb900
BROT42These actions are game defining, so this is where you start devising your strategy depending on the track you are going to race on. For your first game you can simply choose 4 - 4. Play with the counters if you want, then proceed by clicking the confirm button with 4 Tire Tokens and 4 Nitro Token.2confirmTokenAmount626a94296afb910
BROT42Alright, it's time for your other opponents to place their car. Unlike the pole player, they do this by using the "Flying Start" octagon, which is placed on one of the 3 rear sides of the car of any player in front. The black notch on the octagon indicates the foothold on the opponent’s car while the three white ones indicate the "docking" point for placing the car.1selOct_1100_206626a942e258ff00

BROT42We are all set. It's lights out, the race begins! You now have to choose the starting gear for your car. As the pole player, every player behind you will be forced to follow you.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment626a945cd89b900
BROT42Go ahead and open the gear selection panel by clicking the button on the action bar. This will open a dialog window which displays all the gears. At the beginning of the race you may only choose between the 3rd and 5th gear. Let’s go full speed, select the 5th gear, simply by clicking on it.2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment626a945cd89b900

BROT42As you can see, the game is all based on the shape of the octagon, which makes it possible to move to adjacent positions in 8 directions. This means that every time you place your vector or move your car the position must be adjacent to some placed game element and can only be rotated by a multiple of 45deg (don't worry, the implementation will handle all the placements with precision)2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment626a94611c55700
BROT42The movement phase is divided in the following steps: 1. Gear vector placement 2. Boost vector placement (optional) 3. Car movement 4. Car rotation3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment626a94611c55700
BROT42Step 1: *Gear vector placement* In this phase you must place your previously declared gear vector to determine the distance traveled for this current turn. The gear vector must be placed adjacent to the nose of the car, pointing straight in the driving direction.4selOct_800_206626a94611c55700
BROT42You may also place the gear vector on the sides of the car to perform a side-shift maneuver. This action costs 1 Tire Token but lets you access more extreme positions.5selOct_900_106626a94611c55700selOct_900_306 1 selOct_900_106 1

BROT42Step 2a: *Boost prompt* Now you can choose to extend the movement of your car by spending 1 Nitro Token. This lets you access ALL the boost vectors with a smaller size than your current gear vector. Since we are on a straightway now, we can freely sprint ahead. BROT42Step 2b: *Boost vector placement* You can now see highlighted the head position of every boost vector available to you at the moment. Since you are in 5th gear, you can access the boost of size 4 to 1.1selOct_0_206626a9469ca51000
BROT42By hovering on the highlighted octagons you can visualize the different boost sizes. Notice how each boost vector gives you progressively less freedom of movement as it increases in size. BROT42Step 3: *Car movement* Now that you've determined your traveling distance, you can finally move your car and position it in the available spots determined by your placed vector. BROT42After your movement phase, it might be possible to perform some attack maneuver against your opponents, but since you are the pole player and don't have any other car in front of you, no attack maneuver is available and this phase is skipped.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment626a94701106700
BROT42When you are not the first player, meet all the conditions to attack your opponent and are within a reasonable distance from its attack areas, the attack areas are briefly displayed, even if you are not close enough to perform any of them, in order to provide a visual feedback. BROT42To conclude your turn, you have to declare the gear vector you intend to use next turn, in the same manner as you chose the initial gear at the start of the race. BROT42Each turn you may shift gear by only 1 step, but you may spend as many Tire or Nitro tokens you wish to increase the step by 1 for each token spent. BROT42Those are all the basic concepts of the game! Although, we have to talk about three more important things before you can consider yourself a real pro of the asphalt: - Emergency brake - Attack maneuvers - Pit stop Let's see them in detail in the following turns of the game.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment626a9473aaf3f00
BROT42One fundamental thing still. After all player have played their turn, a game round ends and the turn order is recalculated based on each car race positions, so that the first player will play first. BROT42The rule used to determine who's behind who, is checking whether one car is entirely behind the imaginary line defined by the nose of the other car. BROT42Before jumping to the last important concepts of the game, let's see a more generic case of movement phase, to be sure you got everything just said before. BROT42To perform a drafting maneuver the following condition must be met: - the direction of driving must be the same as the attacked opponent - the current gear for both you and your opponent must be at least 3 - no tire token was spent during your movement phase Let's have an overview on each drafting maneuver. BROT42*Push* This maneuver is available at 1 octagon from the rear of the enemy car and results in your opponent not being able to downshift gear in his next turn. BROT42*Drafting* This maneuver is available at a greater distance of the previous (2 octagons) but has no effects other than simply positioning your car behind the attacked car.5archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment626a95ae6e4eb00
BROT42*Slingshot pass* This maneuver is available in the same way as the Push, but for the cost of 1 Nitro Token lets you move in one of the 3 positions in front of the attacked car.6archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment626a95ae6e4eb00
BROT42The conditions that need to be met to perform a shunting maneuver, instead are: - (again) the direction of driving must be the same as the attacked opponent - the current gear for both you and your opponent must be at least 27archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment626a95ae6e4eb00
BROT42*Left/right shunt* (it's the only shunting maneuver) This maneuver is available when entering the octagon adjacent on the left/right of the rear of the opponent’s car and results in the denial of any position on the attacked side for the next movement phase of your opponent. BROT42In the present case no maneuver is really too useful, as the slingshot pass is quite risky and not worth it and the left shunt would not upset the blue car's planned trajectory.11archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment626a95ae6e4eb00
BROT42The best thing here would be a push maneuver, which in this case is more useful for the fact that it lets us shift to the right a little, putting us in a better position to complete the curve, rather than for its effects on the attacked enemy. BROT42Keep in mind that you can always skip the attack phase if the available maneuvers are not ideal at that moment. Now go ahead and perform a simple drafting maneuver by clicking on the white vector.13archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment626a95ae6e4eb10

BROT42See how by choosing to drive on the right we also blocked access to the inner part of the curve for the green car behind? Now that player is forced to perform a long turn, spending a Tire Token and wasting precious “octagon time”.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment626a95bd09e2600
BROT42You may now be wondering: what happens when a player has no valid positions? Well, since there are no car crashes in this game, it’s time for an emergency brake!2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment626a95bd09e2600
BROT42When performing an emergency brake you are forced to downshift until you can find a gear vector that allows for at least one available position, spending 1 Tire Token for each shifted gear.3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment626a95bd09e2600
BROT42If no gear vector can produce a valid position or you simply don’t have enough tire tokens to afford the downshift, you will be forced to stop your car. When stopping the car you skip the movement phase and will start again next turn in 1st gear. You may still rotate the car by 45deg.4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment626a95bd09e2600
BROT42The emergency brake is quite punishing and might be lethal for your race, so be careful avoiding it! Luckily for the green player, this is not the case.5archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment626a95bd09e2600

BROT42We are on the last curve before the end of the first lap, it’s time to consider whether we want to stay in the race and hold our position as much as possible or stop briefly for a pit stop, to refill our Tire and Nitro tokens, hopefully allowing us to quickly regain the lost advantage and then possibly strengthen our chance to hold the pole position.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment626a980461b0700

BROT42When in the pit lane entrance you can declare your intention to go to the box by calling “Box-Box!” (in the original game this would be allowed after completing the last curve, but it’s not that different). Now, before proceeding, let’s talk about how to properly enter the box: to do this, you have to position your car at the end of the movement phase so that its nose is strictly inside the striped area which delimits the box. BROT42When entering the box you should pay attention to your current gear, you cannot just speed inside there and pretend a refill service like it’s nothing! BROT42Entering the box with the 2nd gear grants you a refill total of 8 tokens, which you can divide between the two types as you wish, with a maximum amount of 8 per type.
