Alex_tgiu"Bao" is the Swahili word for "board game" - a traditional and very stategic game played with stones or seeds on a wooden board. Before we start, let's have a look at the board setup!1maintitlebar_content

Alex_tgiuThe board has 4 rows with 8 pits each. The lower 2 rows are ours, the others belong to our opponent. All pits look the same and can be empty or contain seeds. At the beginning, the board is set up like this.2board

Alex_tgiuBut wait, one of the pits looks different! Yes, this one is the Nyumba and has some special rules, we learn about later. In the player's box it is labeled as "functional" - so it seems, it may become non-functional. We learn about that later, too.3circle_89066455_4

Alex_tgiuFinally, there is a storage area of seeds in front of each player. Those seeds come into play with each move.4circle_89066455_0

Alex_tgiuOk, let's jump into the game. Our opponent makes the 1st move, which consists of 2 parts: 1) He selects a a non-empty pit. In this pit, he puts 1 seed from his storage area.7circle_89487571_6

Alex_tgiu2) He selects a direction for the move. All seeds of the selected pit get extracted again and then distributed 1 by 1 in the next 3 pits, called "sowing". Let's take a look!8circle_89487571_5

Alex_tgiuThis is how it looks after the move, 1 seed came to the board and 3 seeds were moved. This move is called a move "without harvest" because our opponent did not take seeds from us. A harvest is only possible, if a directly adjacent pit of the opponent is filled, which was not the case in the initial setup.1circle_89487571_6

Alex_tgiuNow, exactly that happened: We have 2 pits which have seeds of our opponent directly adjacent to it. That's why we have to execute a move "with harvest". Again, the move consists of 2 parts, but they are bit different: 1) We select a pit for putting a new seed. We choose the Nyumba since it contains many seeds and we like to protect them from being harvested. Go and click the Nyumba!2circle_89066455_4

Alex_tgiu2) We select one of the outer pits of the 1st row, called "Kichwa". Now, not our own seeds are taken out, but those of our opponent, which are then sown starting from the selected Kichwa in the direction of the Nyumba. In our case it's just 1 seed, so the sowing directly ends in the 1st pit. Go and click the right Kichwa!1circle_89066455_1

Alex_tgiuOur move put a new seed into the Nyumba, harvested 1 seed from our opponent and sowed it into the right Kichwa. By the way, this checkbox shows pit labels for a better understanding of the BGA game log. Go and try it and compare the move description on the right with the moves you saw!1checkbox_board_labeling

Alex_tgiuOur opponent also makes a move with harvest, takes 2 of our seeds and chooses his right Kichwa. So the seeds will be sown from there in the direction of his Nyumba. But then, something new happens - let's see!1circle_89066455_3

Alex_tgiuPhew, quite a bit happened there! After the 2 harvested seeds were sown from the Kichwa, the last one fell into a non-empty pit. That's why the move just continues in the same direction with another sowing or harvesting - in this case a sowing of the 3 seeds. This procedure of continuous harvests and sowings can go on for quite some while until the last seed falls into an empty pit.2circle_89487571_7

Alex_tgiuOur opponent faces a special rule: If a harvest happens in one of the 2 outer pits, the nearest Kichwa has to be selected.1circle_89066455_8

Alex_tgiuBy the way: In the real game, you can use automatic Kichwa selection option to avoid continously selecting the only possible Kichwa. Within the tutorial, it has no function.2checkbox_kichwa_mode

Alex_tgiuAnd another special situation: If a harvest move ends in the still functional Nyumba, the player may choose whether he wants to stop or continue sowing.3circle_89487571_5

Alex_tgiuOur opponent chooses to continue sowing, called "Safari", and thereby sacrificing his Nyumba. But by that, he manages to bring some seeds into the back row, which is important for later in the game. How did that work? Imagine that the two rows form a circuit, so once the end of a row is reached, the sowing continues in the other row.1circle_89487571_5

Alex_tgiuNow again our Nyumba is threatened. But we can also protect it indirectly with the already shown continuous move. Let's see how that works! Click this pit!2circle_89066455_2

Alex_tgiuAnd finally, we make a 3rd capture within that move, having protected our Nyumba. This was a more complex move, but very typical in Bao, that you try to have multiple harvests and sowings to get as many seeds from the opponent as possible and also protect pits with many seeds.1circle_89066455_4

Alex_tgiuNow after so many harvests, we reached a situation where no harvest is possible. So we just do a move without harvest, which works just like the one done at the very beginning of the game by emptying our own pit and sow the seeds in a selected direction. Alex_tgiuLet's watch a couple of more moves from both players in order to see the game flow! You'll see each new seed being placed. Try to understand the move procedures!1board

Alex_tgiuNow we reached the situations our opponent had before: Since the last seed from a harvest move fell into the functional Nyumba, we have to decide whether to stop or continue sowing. We decide to continue, not only to further fill the back row, but because we can continue the move with so many seeds accumulated. Go and click the button "Go on Safari"!1circle_89066455_4

Alex_tgiuWith this last harvest, our opponent has no seeds left in his inner row and we have won! Wahoo! Only, that we missed the chance to see the 2nd phase of Kiswahili, so just a few words here: Once all seeds are on the board, the 2nd phase starts. The main difference is that instead of putting a new seed, you start by sowing from a pit with at least 2 seeds.1circle_89066455_8
