NekonyancerWelcome to *Impasse,* a unique alternative to Checkers designed by Mark Steere. [blue]Instead of eliminating all of the opponent's checkers, your goal is to get all of your own checkers off the board![/blue]1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment

NekonyancerYou are seated off the *bottom of the board.* (see arrows.) Thus, when pieces move forward, they are moving up on the board, away from you. When they move backward, they move down on the board, toward you. [green]Keep this orientation in mind as I explain the rules![/green]2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment

NekonyancerWe are playing as the yellow player. As you can see, there appear to be eight yellow checkers on the board, but there are actually *twelve.* [red]*The four at the top edge of the board,*[/red] far away from you, have *crowns,* though they look like bullseyes. Crowns indicate that they are actually *stacks of two checkers!*3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment

Nekonyancer[blue]From now on, we will refer to...[/blue] *single checkers* as *singles* and *crowned checkers* as *doubles.* Got it?4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment

NekonyancerTo get your checkers off the board, you'll have to get your doubles into the [red]*nearest row*[/red] (the bottom row).5archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment

Nekonyancer[blue]On your turn, you can perform one of three basic moves:[/blue] *- The single slide.* *- The double slide.* *- The transpose.* The single slide involves moving a single *forward,* away from you. They can only move diagonally, but can move as many *unoccupied* spaces as you desire.2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment

Nekonyancer[blue]Next, let's learn about the *transpose.*[/blue] A transpose is when the *crown* of a double moves onto an adjacent single. This can only be done when the single is *closer* to you than the double, so the transposed crown is moving *backward.*1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment

NekonyancerWe now have a [red]*single*[/red] in the *farthest row!* Whenever this happens, whether by transposing or sliding, you must immediately *"crown"* this checker by placing another of your singles on top of it! NekonyancerIf you don't have any other singles at that moment, the crowning will happen as soon as one becomes available, as long as *this* single is still in the *farthest row.*2clickable_square_5_7

NekonyancerThere's one more move to learn about: *the double slide.* A double slide is how doubles move. Whereas singles can only slide forward, doubles can only slide backward, toward you. [blue]Other than that, it's the same as a single slide![/blue]1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment

Nekonyancer[blue]Did you see that?[/blue] The crown of our double was removed, leaving just a single behind! This is called *"bearing off,"* and it happens whenever a double - whether by sliding or transposing - ends up in the nearest row!1clickable_square_2_0

Nekonyancer*Okay!* You've seen the three basic moves and how you can use them to crown your checkers in the farthest row and bear off in the nearest row! [red]But there's a special move I haven't mentioned yet: *the impasse.*[/red]2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment

NekonyancerYou are at an *impasse* if you have *no legal moves* at the start of your turn. In this case, instead of taking a basic action, you can remove exactly one of your checkers from anywhere on the board. This can be a single or the crown of a double. If this action leaves behind a single in the farthest row, you must then crown it, as normal.3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment
