TheMiTyWelcome to the Hokito tutorial, game tiles will automatically be placed for you. You are playing as the white tiles and your opponent is black1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment

TheMiTyHokito is a game of capturing pieces. On a turn, you will move pieces of your color atop other pieces. The number of spaces you can move is determined by the number on the topmost piece being moved.2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment

TheMiTyYour opponent will be using their "2" piece to move Up, Down, Left, or Right 2 spaces (diagonal moves are not allowed). The opponent chooses to move DOWN twice to create a stack atop of your "3" piece3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment

TheMiTyHow far you can move a piece or a stack is based on the number on the topmost piece being moved. Pieces with a "I" on the top can only move one space; pieces with a "II" must move two spaces; pieces with a "III" on the top must move three spaces. *Note: empty spaces do not count and are ignored during movement.2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment

TheMiTyOnce a player has created a "stack" they can only move that stack if it ends on another stacked tile. Individual tiles must end on individual tiles (thus creating a stack) 3square_4_2

TheMiTyOnce you select which piece you want to move, your available moves will remain visible. Moves that are not legal will become faded and you will not be able to select them.4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment

TheMiTyNow, select your "I" piece in your top row (you are the white player) and create a stack by selecting your opponent's black "I" piece directly above it.5square_3_3

TheMiTyOH NO! Your opponent can now use their "stacked II" piece and place it on your newly created stack. They can do this because empty spaces do not count toward your move limit; only spaces with pieces on them do. Additionally "stacks" can only be moved onto other stacks, so your only piece in jeopardy of being captured by the opponents' stack is your newly created stack. 1square_4_2

TheMiTyNotice: Your opponent was able to move RIGHT then UP. While moving up the blank space is ignored in the movement count. Later games will have more blank spaces, meaning tiles will be able to move quite far.2square_4_2

TheMiTyLet's create a stack that the opponent won't be able to take over on the next turn. Place the "II" from your top row atop the black "III" directly next to the opponent's stack. Your piece can do this as a "II" as the opponent's piece is 2 (occupied) spaces away.1square_1_3

TheMiTyThis has now forced your opponent to work on creating a stack from a single piece. They will take this piece and place it on your single "II" piece, creating another stack. See how they are able to just skip the empty space1maintitlebar_content

TheMiTyWonderful! You are almost done with the tutorial, and you are doing great! Now the opponent has a stack that is two moves away from your "stacked II" piece. Go ahead and take it. You may need to minimize this tutorial to see the opponent's highlighted piece you want to capture.1square_2_4

Gameplay will continue until one player cannot make a legal move: *Pieces only move Up, Down, Left, or Right *Single pieces can only move atop other single pieces; stacks can only move atop other stacks. *When moving a stack, you move the entire stack.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment

TheMiTyOne final scoring tip. *You’ll score by counting the number of pieces in each remaining stack and multiplying the total by the number of the piece on top of the stack. TheMiTyNow, it is time to bait our opponent instead of going straight for the points. Let's take your lower stack and take out the opponent's "I" stack. 1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment
