TheBoardBaker*The Homestead Act of 1862 allowed Americans to claim undeveloped land by living on and farming it for five years.* In Homesteaders, players are settlers in the Old West, claiming land to develop into a town. The player who contributes the most to building that town into a city will have the city named after him and be de-clared the winner. [blue]*The game is played over 10 rounds and the player with the most VP at the end of the game is the winner.*[/blue]2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment

TheBoardBakerEach round features an income phase, where players acquire resources, and an auction phase, in which players bid for available land and then spend their resources to develop a building on that land. At the end of the game there is a Final Income and Scoring round. Players build a city over three stages: • The Settlement (round 1-4) • The Town (round 5-8) • The City (round 9-10) The stages dictate which buildings are available to be built.3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment

TheBoardBaker*This is our Player Area* Here we can see how many of each resource we have (or need) and the building(s) that we have currently developed, that we can staff and utilize to gain more resources and VP.4player_zone_blue

TheBoardBakerTo begin the game we must place our first *Worker* in one of our buildings to begin collecting resources. Every player starts with a Homestead as their first Building. [blue]*Click on the highlighted worker, then the highlighted space on the starter Homestead card, then the Confirm Placement button above.*[/blue] Doing so will allow us to collect one Wood resource.5archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment

TheBoardBakerNotice that our Homestead card also generates an income of 2 Silver without having to place a Worker, so our Silver total below shows 8+2. Once our placement is complete we will then have 10 Silver. The amount of VP a card is worth is listed inside the Gold Star. This card isn't worth VP, but you can place a Worker to earn VP if desired.1player_zone_blue

TheBoardBaker*Trade Tokens* Trade Tokens are needed in the game to trade one recourse for another AND for hiring more Workers. Reference the chart below at anytime. [green][tip] Notice that when selling resources you also gain a VP! [/green] So selling isn't a bad thing. Make sure you collect enough Trade Tokens to sell all of your resources at the end of the game.2tradeicon_blue

TheBoardBakerNow that we have sent our *Worker* out into the workforce we need to pay 1 Silver per Worker. Since we just started we one have 1 Worker. [blue]*Click the Pay: button above to proceed.*[/blue]1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment

TheBoardBakerOne really unique mechanism of Homesteaders is the *Debt* feature. When it come time to pay for items in the game, if you don't have enough you can take out Debt. *BUT* you must pay back your Debt before the end of the game. [green]*For every Debt take out your gain 2 Silver, but it cost 5 Silver/1 Gold to pay off at the end of round 10.*[/green]3loan_group

TheBoardBaker*Now for the fun part of the game! Bidding!* Players bid by placing their bid token on any available auction, on the space corresponding to their bid. The minimum bid is 3, and all bids must be higher than any opponent’s previous bid on that auction.5board

TheBoardBakerA player may make any bid regardless of cash on hand. (They can use debt or sell resources to pay later.) If a player is outbid then on their next turn they will either make a new valid bid or pass. If on a player’s turn they are currently winning an auction, then they do nothing.6board

TheBoardBaker*When a player passes in the auction:* They advance their marker on the Railroad Development Track and immediately take the item corresponding to that space or any previous space on the track. Once a player passes their turn is skipped for the rest of the auction.7train_bonus_1_trade

TheBoardBakerFor the 2-3 player game there are two active auctions. A third is added in a 4 player game. [green]*During a 2 player game a 3rd "Dummy" player (purple) is used during the auction phase.*[/green] The Dummy's bid price is set by the third card in the Auction area. If the dummy is outbid it goes up, but not past 9. If someone passes (the Dummy "wins"), it goes down, but not past 3 1board

TheBoardBakerDuring an Auction, Auction Tiles are refreshed, one on each auction. IF you win the auction you may choice one Building of that type to build. For example: Auction 1 - allows us to build a Residential (green) OR a Commercial (red) building. Auction 2 - will gain us an extra Worker AND an advancement on the Railroad Track.2board

TheBoardBaker[green]*[tip] Winning Auction 1 always come with two benefits:*[/green] 1- The winner gets first pick of the Buildings Stock. 2 - They get to place the Dummy bidder and bid first in the next Auction. A little funny, but we are going to skip the actual bidding here and show you a better example in Round 2. We skipped ahead to the Round 2 Auction to better show you how one works.* Between our two new Auctions we have the options of bidding on an Industrial or a Residential Building. So let's look down at the Building Stock to see our options. We are still early in the game so we want a high production Building. With only 1 Wood to our name we really can't build much without Trading or taking on a lot of Debt. So our options are between the [green]Farm[/green] or the [blue]Foundry[/blue] *Let's go for the Farm!*2main_building_container

TheBoardBakerTo place our starting bid on the Farm we select a place on the Auction board. [blue]*Click on the under Auction 2, then the Confirm Bid button above.*[/blue]3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment

TheBoardBakerNotice that our opponent decided to not outbid us, but rather shifted over to Auction 1. *We won Auction 2!*1board

TheBoardBaker*Now that our opponent has selected and bought their building, its our turn!* First we have to pay for the Auction. We won with a bid of 6. Looking in our Player Area there is a -6 under the 8 silver that we have. So we are good! Let's pay. [blue]*Click the Pay: $ button.*[/blue]1player_zone_blue

TheBoardBaker*Now we get to build!* Since we know we already have the wood needed to build we don't need to do any trading. [blue]*Click on the Farm card then the Build button. *[/blue]1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment

TheBoardBakerNow we need to Confirm our actions. If we want to build something else instead, we could hit the Cancel button and start over. [blue]*Click the Confirm button.*[/blue]1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment

TheBoardBaker*Round 3!* The 10 rounds actually go pretty fast once you know what you are doing! *Let's show you how Debt and Trade works!* [blue]*Click on the Take Debt button first.*[/blue] Notice how our Silver went from 4 to 6! Now we have lots to work with again. But also note that we now have a Debt we have to deal with later. So be careful how much you take on! The auto advance isn't working here so click Next for the next couple of prompts.1player_zone_blue

TheBoardBakerWe need another worker. In order to get one we need an Apple and a Trade Token. We won't be able to hire our Worker this round since we only have 1 Trade Token, we would need 2 to hire outright. 1 to buy an Apple and 1 to hire, but at least we will be prepaid to do so the next Round! *Now let's get that Apple.* [blue]*Click the Show Trade button.*[/blue] Now that our Trade menu appeared we can buy an Apple. 1 Trade Token & 2 Silver = 1 Apple. TheBoardBaker*And that's the basics of the game!* [green]*After the 10th round there is a Final Income and Scoring round.*[/green] In which players repeat the Income phase one final time, and then use the Marketplace as much as they like in order to pay off Debt and convert their Trade Tokens, Silver, and resources into Victory Points. Each player calculates their score by adding up the following: • Victory Point collected during the game, • Point values of their buildings, • Point values of all bonuses on their buildings. • 2 Victory Points for each Gold, Livestock, and Copper resource.
