TheBoardBaker*Hydroplanes is an alternation of development and racing phases.* For this base game, we just do the races. Each player takes a turn to play a card from their hand and move forward on the circuit. After 3 laps, the player who has accumulated the most victory points during the races wins the Schneider Trophy. 2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment

TheBoardBakerEach turn consists of 3 possible actions: *Play a Card*, *Throttle Back* (Pass), or *Bet*. [blue]*Play a Card*[/blue] Each card indicates the base speed of the plane. The played cards are placed on a personal discard pile, so that only the last one is visible. Each card can only be used *once* during the game. The hand is then refreshed with a new card until cards are depleted.3myhand

TheBoardBakerWhen playing a card we need to keep [red]*Curve*[/red] and [red]*Overspeed*[/red] in mind. Each curve of the circuit is marked by a line and a number. When an aircraft crosses this virtual line, if its total speed (card + modifier) is greater than the indicated number, the aircraft is [red]*Overspeeding*[/red], and the pilot has taken a risk: he must draw a token from the *Danger* bag.5board

TheBoardBakerWhen a token from the [red]*Danger*[/red] bag is drawn, there are two possibilitie: If the token is an ALERT (black), it was a warning without consequence and the token is discarded. If it is a DAMAGE token (yellow), the aircraft did not take the risk well and the token is added to the DAMAGE gauge on the COCKPIT. When a seaplane registers a 4th DAMAGE, it crashes and is placed last for the lap. 6danger_85669515

TheBoardBaker[red]*DANGEROUS OVERTAKING*[/red] There can only be one seaplane per square. If a player ends his move on an occupied square, he continues to advance to the next free square. As a consequence of this *Dangerous Overtaking*, he draws a Danger token from the bag in the same way as for an *Overspeed* turn. 7archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment

TheBoardBaker*THROTTLE BACK (Pass)* Your deck of Move cards will have to last long enough to complete the three successive laps. So sometimes it makes sense to save your strength and choose throttle back rather than play a card. Throttle Back (Pass) yields a move of *2 squares*, and you still apply the possible modifier (Resistance or Drafting), then discard a card from your hand by placing it under your deck.8archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment

TheBoardBaker[blue]*BETTING*[/blue] Allows players to obtain winnings in the form of *Aircoins* and *bonus VPs*. We are betting on who is going to win the lap! We start with 10 coins. Once per lap a player can bet on the plane of their choice by clicking one of the 4 slots below. Each slot has a different risk and reward. The second slot from the top *costs* 10 coins, but *awards* 3 VP and 10 coins. 9bettingBoard

TheBoardBaker[blue]*Pilots*[/blue] Each pilot has an added special ability. *Joseph Sadi-Lecointe* (France) Loves to lead. He does not suffer the -1 penalty when he is in the lead, whenever he plays a card of value 5+. *David d’Arcy Greig* (England) Follows turbulence unusually well and has a +1 drafting bonus, even when he is one square away from the opponent in front of him. 10pilote_85669515

TheBoardBaker*Mario de Bernardi* (Italy) Knows how to better exploit the phenomenon of drafting. He gets a +2 bonus (instead of +1) when he is immediately behind an opponent. Use the back of the Drafting chip with the +2 indication. *James Doolittle* (United States) An intellectual pilot, has 4 cards in his hand instead of 3, to better adapt to all situations.11pilote_85669515

TheBoardBakerTwo final elements and we can get started! *Air Resistance* and *Drafting*. [blue]*Air Resistance*[/blue] Any aircraft that moves through the air experiences resistance that slows its movement. In this game, air resistance is simulated by *reducing by 1* the movement of the lead seaplane. Marked by the [red]red flag -1[/red] below. Follow planes are not affected.12board

TheBoardBaker*Drafting* Taking advantage of the turbulence created by an aircraft immediately in front of it, less effort is required to fly. This phenomenon is simulated by *adding 1* to the movement of seaplanes that are, at the beginning of the turn, immediately behind another plane. Marked by the [green]draft +1[/green] below. This bonus is always applied.13board

TheBoardBaker[blue]Now that you know the basics, we can finally start![/blue] Let's start by advancing our plane with our 6 card. The gate we're about to go through has a [red]speed limit of 8[/red]. Because of our lead the 6 gets effected by Air Resistance of [red]-1[/red], so our plane is going to advance 5 places. *Click the 6 card and then confirm.* We'll let our opponents play out. We'll walk through betting and scoring in our other turns.14myhand_item_10

TheBoardBaker[blue]For the beginning of this turn we're going to bet![/blue] Looking at the game board, we're in the lead and we intend to keep it that way! So let's bet on ourselves to win. We feel confident, so let's bet all 10! *Click on the 10 here and then on our name above.*2bettingBoard

TheBoardBakerNow that we have bet we can also [blue]*Play a Card*[/blue]. We need to stay under 5 for speed to make the corner without risking [red]*Damage*[/red]. *Pick our 5 card and Confirm.*4myhand_item_8

TheBoardBaker[blue]Oops! We forgot to account for our draft benefit when we chose our 5.[/blue] The draft actually gave us an addition space. Which brought us to 6 spaces, resulting in us [red]*Overspeeding*[/red] the turn and needed to draw a *Danger* token, and it was a [red]*Damage*[/red]! We place the [red]red Danger[/red] token on our board. Our opponents will go now and finish out this lap.1j_85669515

TheBoardBaker[blue]The end of the lap/round is triggered when the first plane reaches the finish line.[/blue] Our opponent finished in first place for the lap! He received 10 VP pts. They also bet on France to win 1st, which they did, so they got an additional 4 VPs. We came in 2nd, so we got 8 VP. Although, we lost our bet (since we didn't come in 1st) so we lost our Aircoins. 2bettingBoard
