As our panda lazily chewed, a dream began to form, one where he held the same importance as all of the animals of the Zodiac and even had a special role to play!1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment

Scribal*Panda Spin* is a card shedding/ladder climbing game - with a twist! The game is played to 15 Bamboo(points) and each round is played until only one player has cards left in their hand. This tutorial will take us through the first round. [blue][tip] We recommend you complete this tutorial on a large screened device which will take about 10 minutes.[/blue]2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment

ScribalIn *Panda Spin*, each player starts with a hand of 12 cards and we are working to empty our hand. The game has 5 decks, or suits, of 13 cards. Each game will use 1 suit per player, except in a 2 player game where you will have 3 suits. [blue][tip] Each suit represents one of the 5 elements in the Chinese Zodiac, and has a different ability. We'll look at those more closely as they come up.[/blue]4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment

ScribalThere are 5 valid combinations of cards that can be played. Our opponent has started by playing a single 3, which is the lowest value in the game. The suit is not important at this stage as we do not need to match it, only the combination that was played.5archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment

ScribalLooking at our hand, let's play the *Jack*. The *Jack* is represented by a Panda and also has a panda symbol under the *J*. It is also the lowest card we have that doesn't fit in another combination. Click on [blue]*the Jack*[/blue] to play it and then click *Confirm*.6archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment

ScribalThe Panda, obviously a fan of Jack Black, has seen all of the "Kung Fu Panda" movies and likes to brag about his prowess in martial arts, when really he can only flip people. His friends humor him and go along with it because it makes him happy. Click the [blue]*left 9*[/blue] to flip, or spin, it in our hand.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment

ScribalThe 9, part of the *Water* deck, became an 8 with a *Water Symbol* under it. The *Water Symbol* is a wild and we'll look at that more closely later in the tutorial.2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment

Scribal[blue][tip] When you play a card with the *Panda symbol* on it, what happens will depend on the [green]*Panda's Mood*[/green]. The Panda has two moods and that can change every round.[/blue]3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment

ScribalOur opponent played a Chinese 2. The Chinese 2 is the highest card in the deck. While there are two ways to beat it, we can't. We'll have to pass for now, but don't worry, we'll have our revenge. You can hear the panda growling "If you strike me down, I will become more powerful than you can possibly imagine!" Click *Pass*.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment

ScribalIn *Panda Spin*, it is possible to pass when you can play. Because we passed, the card we played is spun and that *Jack* became an 8 with a *Water Symbol*. The winner of trick discards all of their played cards. [blue][tip] When you pass, if every card you played was white, they will be spun and returned to your hand. If any of them had the blue side up, they are all discarded.[/blue]1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment

ScribalOur opponent is about to lead another single, so let's skip ahead to the next trick.2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment

ScribalIn that trick, we each played twice with each of our opponents cards getting flipped when they passed. Let's look at another combination we can play, the *run*.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment

ScribalA *run* is 2-5 sequential numbers. Click the [blue]*4-5-6*[/blue] to play them and then click Confirm.2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment

Scribal[blue][tip] Coincidentally, they are all *Water* cards, but a run does not need to be of the same suit.[/blue]1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment

ScribalRemember back in slide 4 when I said that we needed to match the combination led? This is one exception. Our opponent played a *Bomb* and that is the most powerful combination in the game. A *Bomb* consists of 4 or more of the same value where no water symbol is used. Only another *Bomb* with a higher value or more of any value will be able to beat it.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment

ScribalWhen a *Bomb* is played, every symbol is ignored, so our opponent was not able to spin cards in their hand. [blue][tip] The card on the left is an upgraded *Fire* card. When a *Fire* card is upgraded, it will either have a double value or a single high value with a *Fire symbol*.[/blue]2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment

ScribalOur opponent lead with a Chinese 2 which is an upgraded *Fire* card. The *Fire Symbol* allowed our opponent to incinerate(discard) a card from their hand. [blue][tip] The 2 can't be part of a run, but can be part of a set, which we will see soon.[/blue] Since we don't have any way to beat it, click *Pass*.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment

ScribalOur opponent led with a set, the 4th combination in the game. In this case, they played a pair of 10s. To play, we need a higher set with the same number of values. What can we play?1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment

ScribalI hope you said the [blue]pair of *Aces*[/blue]. Select them and Confirm.2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment

Scribal[blue][tip] A *Set* can be 2 or more of the same value. If you lead with a set of 4 or more, you will be able to use the symbols and does need to be followed with a set of the same size and can be beaten by an element card, if you meet the other requirements.[/blue]1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment

ScribalIt's time to learn about the last combination in the game, the *Formation*! Upon hearing *Formation*, you notice the Panda giddily bouncing from foot to foot. I didn't even know Pandas could move like that, or look giddy.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment

ScribalA formation is a set of runs and we'll play all our 8s, the 9, and one 10. Since I haven't explained the *Water symbol*, yet, I'll play it for you.2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment

ScribalThe Panda roars behind us "*KAMEHAMEHA*." Clearly, he's a Dragonball Z fan and recognizes that canonically only the Spirit Bomb could defeat Majin Buu. That's 3 runs of 8-9-10 (8, 8, 8, 9, 10 printed on the cards and 9, 9, 10, 10 coming from the water drops, which will be explained shortly). I don't think our opponent will be able to beat that.1ps_decks

Scribal*AHHHH!* Our opponent won that trick by playing an *Element* card. Element cards can beat every combination, except a *Bomb*. Maybe they are actually Majin Buu. In this case, we needed to play a combination with 3 or more values. After playing the *Element*, our opponent drew 2 cards.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment

Scribal[blue][tip] Element cards can be discarded, so you won't be prevented from emptying your hand if you can't meet the requirements to play it.[/blue]2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment

ScribalWe won the round and earned 2 Bamboo because our opponent had 2 cards left in their hand. In a game with more than 2 players, the first person to go out would get points equal to the hand of the opponent with the most cards, but no more than 7 points in any round.
